Mission & History

Inwood Canoe Club’s (ICC) mission is to unite persons in the community interested in canoeing and kayaking; to educate, train and develop paddlers to participate in recreational and competitive canoe and kayak activities; to promote recreation, sportsmanship and water safety; and provide a safe forum for community access to the river.

Nestled on the Hudson River north of the G.W. Bridge and a block off the Hudson Greenway Trail, the ICC is the oldest canoe and kayak club in Manhattan. This year, we'll celebrate our 110th Anniversary since our founding in 1902.  On a stretch of shoreline that was once graced by a number of boating clubs, the ICC is the last to survive.

Between 1936 – 1986, 5 members of the ICC proudly competed in the Olympics representing the US. Twice in its history, the physical building of the ICC has been destroyed by fire, but the club has successfully rebuilt, and is now as strong as ever.  The ICC has maintained its facility and community activities through a dedicated and growing membership.

For the last decade we have served 3,600 people, mostly from the Washington Heights and Inwood areas, during our Open House events, during which attendees learn paddling skills, gain access to the NYC waterways and contribute to cleanup efforts along the Hudson’s Shore.

Inwood Canoe Club’s Open House program is a public paddling, water safety and land stewardship event.  They are held Sunday mornings from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekends at our Hudson River boathouse on the west end of Dyckman Street in Inwood, Manhattan.  Guests come to learn the basics of kayaking and canoeing and water safety.  In addition, they participate in the club’s ongoing efforts to improve and maintain a portion of the Hudson River shoreline.
